Feather Fringe Skirt

So what else can we do with all of these feathers for sale? I just saw a great idea for a simple feather skirt using feather fringe. I haven't tried it myself yet, but when I do I'll add the pictures. Basically you take a skirt and add feather fringe or trim to the bottom hem. You can do this by buying feather fringe already constructed or find some feathers you like and make your own.
To make your own you will need the feathers, some fabric and a sewing machine. Start with a light material. Nylon lining should work well. Measure the opening of your skirt bottom all around the hem. Cut the fabric at that length and about one and a half inches. Fasten with thread or glue the feathers quill end to the fabric being careful to fasten only on half of the one and a half inches. Then fold the material over and stitch down the strip right over the feathers to secure them and give a nice finish to the fringe. Here are a few examples of feather trim.

After you have the fringe, glue the fabric part around the inside of a skirt at the hem. You will want the feathers to hang down about 3" from the bottom of the skirt. Kind of like if your slip was showing. You can see what I'm talking about in this video from a morning show.

Adding a bit of feather fringe to any garment you own will bring it right up to date. This is just too easy not to try !
Update to this Post: Wow I just saw a skirt just like this and the price in the boutique was 279.00. Can you believe it? The feathers at the hem were attached using what looked like a seam binding material. They added a row of fluffy feathers (Boa) at the waist to mimic a feather belt. Very Cute!

Feather Wreaths

Feather Wreath

Feather Boa Wreath

There are many ways to use feathers for Christmas decor and feather wreaths are probably the most spectacular. I am going to take you through the easy process of creating three different styles, after that let your imagination take over!
The first and maybe the simplest is a feather boa wrapped around a wreath form. Start with a styrofoam form in the size and shape of your choosing. I use a round 16" for a large door. Feather boas come in many different colors. I choose one color usually either red, white, green,or silver gray, because I like the solid color effect. Now warm up the glue gun or you can use small thumb tacks the same color as your feathers.
Take the end of the boa and fasten it with a drop of the glue or a tack to the foam. from there begin to wrap the strand around the form adhering the boa at least every two wraps as you go. You may need two boas for this job. After the form is completely wrapped secure the end. And that's it! You have a beautiful fluffy wreath. Keep it simple after that or add a shiny satin bow or sparking ornaments.
The second style is easy too. This time purchase a straw wreath form in the size you prefer. You will need something to poke starter holes and a sharpened pencil or a pen will work. This time you are going to use single feathers. These should be large. Rooster tail feathers work well for this and can be purchased in bright colors. Depending on the size of the wreath you will need about 50 to 75 feathers. Begin around the inside of the wreath form and use your pen to poke a small hole. Insert the pointed end of the feather into the hole and a little farther so it is secure. Continue around overlapping the feathers as you go so the straw doesn't show. Beautiful!
The third wreath I will discuss isn't all feathers. In this wreath you simply use feathers as an accent. Reuse a wreath from last year or buy an inexpensive one to make over. Secure feathers by using glue or tacks depending on the form material. Use a smattering of fluffy marabou feathers or use peacock feathers to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Remember you can find feathers for sale on this site, so have a look around and see if anything strikes your fancy! And remember a feather wreath isn't just for Christmas decor. These are great all year round.

Finding Feathers for Sale

Finding a variety of feathers for sale can be a challenging endeavor. Second rate chopped and dyed feathers are available at some hobby stores, but buying from a bird owner will give the best quality.
Feathers can be utilized for tying fishing flies, costumes, jewelry, and many other crafty projects. Try making a dream catcher or a necklace. Fans, large or small are very sellable and are used in dance, as part of a costume or in ceremonies. Decorating with feathers is trendy. Try a vase full of colorful Macaw and pheasant plumes or add a few feathers in with your flowers. Update your fall wardrobe with several well placed pieces or layer over a mini skirt for something fabulous.
Look for feathers specific to your project, know the sizes and colors to look for. They should be clean and may have visible barbs on the end of the quill. Sizes can range from an inch to over 25 inches long.one-half inch to 26 inches long. This should be noted by your seller, but if not just ask. Also if shade of color needs to be very specific, ask the seller to verify as sometimes (depending on your computer) shade could be off a tad.
